Southern Counties Womens Competition Gets Underway
Despite the efforts of the weather, the competition kicked off last evening, with the Army entertaining Middlesex at Ashford Town’s Robert Parker Stadium.
The match was played in heavy rain, which became torrential. However, we were treated to an excellent match. Middlesex were worthy winners, showing great team spirit and togetherness, especially considering that 7 of their players were making their debut. The Army team also demonstrated a high level of skill and determination.
Shakira Roberts put Middlesex ahead in the 5th minute and added a second goal in the 17th minute. The Army came back strongly in the second half but Middlesex contained them and Aimee Durn clinched the visitors’ win with a well-judged lob in added time.
The players were all heroines but the match officials, who did an excellent job in extremely difficult conditions, deserve our admiration as well.
Our thanks are due to Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC for their hospitality and for the use of their fine facilities. They are commended on their pitch, which held up superbly despite the deluge, which continued from the early afternoon right through to the end of the game.
