Midweek ending 5th October by Mason Norton
Not much to write about in the end this midweek. The heavy rain which started on Sunday night was still falling late on Tuesday. Official Met Office figures show that September 2024 was two and a half times wetter than average for Leicestershire, most of it seemingly falling in the final 10 days of the month. Consequently, three of the five Senior Cup ties scheduled for Tuesday night involving LSL Premier sides were postponed- Birstall United against Magna 73, Coalville Town against Ellistown, and Ingles versus AFC North Kilworth. All three ties have been rescheduled for next Tuesday.
The two ties played were both on 3G. Holders Kirby Muxloe from Step 6 began their defence with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Highfield Rangers in the end, Ewan Harrington, Roman Watson-Quilter and sub Tevez Atkinson scoring for Kirby. Cottesmore gave Lutterworth Athletic more of a fright at Hall Park, and took the lead early on through Harry Stannard. It looked like Cottesmore might go in at half-time in front, but Luke Garner equalised for the hosts five minutes from time. The second half saw Athletic play with the wind at their backs, and Ethan Richardson scored twice to put them in the box seat. That appeared to be enough, only for Cottesmore to pull one back through Kadeem Price on 82 minutes to set up what looked like it might be a tense finish. Cottesmore were unable to find the extra bit, and Richardson secured his hat-trick on 86 minutes, before the scoreline was given extra flourish by sub Connor Wilkinson scoring deep into injury time to see Lutterworth through to the next round, winning 5-2.
There's a better forecast for this weekend, so hopefully there won't be too many postponements to report when we next check in for a bumper edition of Ramble Round on the busiest weekend of the season. See you then.
