Championship One League Cup Final
A goal in each half from Austin Broadbent helped The Navigation Tavern (Mirfield) lift the Championship One League Cup following their close 2-1 win over Angel Inn (Robin Hood) in the Wakefield & District Sunday Football League Competition.
The final at the Nostell MW complex kicked-off with an early goal as Rob Mallander of the Navigation sent a shot rocketing against the bar in the game's first attack and saw Austin Broadbent followed up with a header on the rebound to give Navigation Tavern a 1-0 lead.
Navigation had the momentum following a start to the match they hoped for and Angel Inn responded with Charlie Thompson inspiration as he cleverly skipped past his marker and sent an early shot forcing a low diving save for a corner.
Charlie Thompson was in the action again as he tried to pull his side back level, linking up with Jack Silverwood with the latter sending his shot narrowly wide.
Angel Inn grew into the game as momentum now with them as another chance was wasted as Jack Silverwood sent a well-weighted cross to the back post which saw Morgan East direct his header into the ground but his effort was easily gathered by Navigation goalkeeper Nick Kaye.
A battle with Navigation Tavern forward Austin Broadbent and Angel Inns goalkeeper Callum Swift concluded the first half as Broadbent forced the save of the match from Callum Swift - the first effort was a chest control and volley effort from Broadbent forced Swift into action with save to his left. This was followed by his next effort with the watching spectators certain the ball was over the line producing a point blank save from Swift.
Navigation Tavern started the second half like the first on the front foot as Austin Broadbent saw his diving header saved after being found superbly by Joel Loveday. Joel Loveday must be left wondering how he hasn't got an assist yet as he sends in another cross but this time midfielder Brandon Silverwood failed to connect.
Angel Inn, the youngest side in the league, rallied to come back as saw Ben Dobson's 25-yard free kick whistling just wide off the mark. Navigation Tavern's Rob Mallander linked up with Brandon Silverwood to send a shot on target to remind them the threat in the counter-attack and forced Jake Nevell to clear one effort off the line.
Angel Inn fought back to draw level with the man who looked lively all match, Charlie Thompson who scored following a free-kick from on the edge of the box whipping in is finished in clinical fashion to make it 1-1..
The celebrations were shot-lived, as well as the certainty of going into extra time and penalties, as Austin Broadbent scored from a corner with header into the top corner. to regain his sides lead.
Late drama saw Angel Inn push everyone forward from a Jack Silverwood free-kick which saw goalkeeper Callum Swift for Angel Inn nearly gets on the end of it but the vital touch just evading him as Navigation held on nervously to secure the win.
