Summary of the action and events from Week 6 of NTU's Inter-Mural League
The last few weeks have proved to be challenging ones for the LIGA with no games being playable since 14th November. This weeks fixture list was itself reduced from 8 games to 5 due to the unavailability of Clifton Playing Fields, Bayer Lexerkusen vs Mathematic Bilbao being rearranged and the sad withdrawal from the league of Real FC due to financial issues.Nonetheless the five games that did take place provided plenty of action.
In Pre-LIGA A Brack City and BSOC Bulldogz went into their matches knowing that a win would secure their place in LIGA A post Christmas. Brack managed this convincingly. Leading 1-0 at half time, a second half collapse by Table Tennis Society saw Brack run out eventual 7-1 winners. BSOC Bulldogz cut it far finer. In their last fixture of the seeding period they narrowly won 4-3 against ACS, who could have caught BSOC had they themselves won. A further upshot of these two results was that Mathematic Bilbao managed to qualify for LIGA A without kicking a ball, as Table Tennis Society and ACS now trail them by four points, but each only have one game left to play. In fact the two will face each other on 9th January in a direct head-to-head to see who will pick up the last qualifying spot in Pre-LIGA A, with a win for either being enough to secure this. A draw however would leave the door open for Bayer Lexerkusen who will face Red Stripe Belgrade on the same day. Should Lex win and the aforementioned draw occur, Lex would then need to beat Mathematic Bilbao in their rearranged fixture from this week. Maths face off with Brack City on 9th January in a clash to see who will get the bragging rights for finishing top of Pre-LIGA A
In Pre-LIGA B the results were just as meaningful but far less conclusive. BSOC Allstars followed their societymates in cutting it close in beating Kings Of Leon Osman 3-2, whilst Quantity Surville picked up a 5-1 victory over FC Maltings. These two results, which were both wins for the lower ranked teams in the matches, mean that four teams can still claim any one of the three qualifying spots in LIGA A. Maltings can do no more having now played all their matches but wins for Quantity Surville over Kings Of Leon Osman or BSOC Allstars against East Staines massive on 9th January will see them qualify. A Kings Of Leon over Quantity Surville though will mean that QS will have to face FC Futsal in one final fixture to see if they can claim the last spot in the top division.
LIGA C saw only one game this week. AFC Botton played their first competitive match since 31st October and proved that patience is a virtue gaining a 7-1 victory over a Bayer Neverloosen team they had drawn 3-3 with on the opening day of the season. This result was enough to lift them to the top of the table.
The LIGA now takes a break until after Christmas due to the end of Term. The games that have taken place so far this season have proved competitive and have also shown the high standard of footballing abilities in the league. Hopefully this will continue in 2013
