Pupils from Stamford Bridge Primary School are celebrating after reaching the national finals of the Danone Nations Cup, the world’s biggest football tournament for ten to 12 year olds.

Stamford Bridge Under-11s triumphed in the midlands regional final at Nottingham University and will now play in the national final on Saturday, May 24 at Aston Villa’s training ground.

Victory there would lead to them being crowned national seven-aside champions.

Stamford Bridge successfully progressed from the Wolds Cluster primary schools round, the East Riding finals and then Humberside regional finals.

That earned them a place at the midlands regional final, where they topped their group with seven points.

In the semi-finals, they beat St Joseph’s School 3-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw, before losing 1-0 to St Peter’s School Nottinghamshire in a tense final.

Liz Shadrack, PE co-ordinator at Stamford Bridge Primary, said: “What a fantastic day we had in Nottingham.

“We were very proud to be representing the Humberside region at such a prestigious event which was attended by Casey Stoney, England women’s captain.

“The team were outstanding throughout and a real credit to our school.
“We’re all really looking forward to the national finals in Birmingham in May.”
