Peter Raynbird Cup
Basingstoke Labour Club caused a shock by knocking out Division One Basingstoke United from the Peter Raynbird Cup and there is every chance they will make the Semi Finals as they are drawn against Basingstoke Athletic, who are bottom of Division One. Although not at full strength they had much of the play but fell behind in the 35th minute when Josh Lowther struck for United. In the 68th minute Jack Barlow equalised from a Josh Dickens cross and only a fine save by James Sallows stopped a fine header from Dave Ratcliffe giving Labour the lead in the 63rd. James McCallion, the former Overton United man, was in good form in midfield and was to play a big part in this outstanding performance. In the 75th minute his header from a Wayne Barlow free kick proved much too good for Sallows and then with five minutes left to play he scored again, this time slotting home another well placed Barlow free kick.
Basingstoke Saturday League
Division One
As all clubs take a two week break from fixtures, it is Basingstoke Royals who head the table by just one point above Hook, but they did not have it all their own way when facing Basingstoke Athletic. Although they are propping up the Division One table, Basingstoke Athletic put on a good performance against them, they lost 3-2 in the end. An error in the Athletic defence following a Craig Barker free kick led to Ama Bhuller giving Royals the lead in the 40th minute. Athletic hit back in the 55th to level through Nathan Read, a very nice twenty yarder, but they were not level for long when Stephen Price put away a cut back from Cobi Judd. In the 70th Price scored again, this time Barker with the centre. Athletic fought back and when a 25-yard shot from Ryan Evans caught the keeper flat footed; it meant a difficult last ten minutes, with Royals retaining their slender lead.
The big surprise was Bounty United beating Twentyten 2-1 and so registered their first league win of the season and this was against a team they lost 5-1 at Castle Fields in October. As before Twentyten dominated play but failed to score until the 60th minute. It was following a Bounty corner they broke away with Joe Osborne playing through for Joe Hill to net from 30 yards. Twentyten failed to create any clear-cut chances and in the 70th minute a defender slipped in clearing and it allowed Simon Farrell to beat the offside trap and Bounty levelled. In the 80th their defence were caught out again when Jordon Wainwright broke away, his shot was parried by keeper Harry Nash and the ball fell nicely for Craig Williamson to have a tap in and it proved the winner.
It was a 6-2 win for Hook in their home game against Tadley Calleva A and Aaron King was playing his first game of the season for Hook. Also, new to the squad was Dan Framp and it was following his long run and pass that gave King his chance, put away in the 4th minute. Greg Archer was in good form in the Hook goal, pulling off a good save before Gary Hibbs equalised in the 8th minute. King struck again following an assist by Kieran Farmer and they went 3-1 ahead when Framp gave Dan Mourandian his opportunity in the 30th minute. By the break, it was 4-1 with another from Mourandian, with Dan Mellors and King involved in the build-up. Framp netted the fifth in the 78th and another newcomer James Adrian added another before Stephen Burgess scored the second for Tadley with a shot in off the post.
D.C, U.K won 6-1 at home to AFC Aldermaston Reserves to move into third position. The DCUK goals were shared by Lorne Howard, Stuart Austen. Ben Nicholls, Ashley Elward, Finley Hall and an OG. Ricky Waknell was the Aldermaston scorer.
Division Two
The Division Two leaders Herriard Sports had no game and after beating Twentyten Reserves 4-1, it is Overton United who moves into second spot, a point behind. Twentyten matched them until the 36th minute but trailed 2-0 at half time. It was in the 36th minute when Yaka Kaba scored from a Scotty Winterbourne pass and soon after this Winterbourne, who had an outstanding game, scored from a Michael Burry corner kick. The visitors then lost two men injured and although they had substitutes the third goal came when Armon Ince scored when put through by Kaba. Gavin Alexander in the Overton goal made a couple of good saves before Dan Hancock pulled a goal back and when they were awarded a penalty, Hancock took the kick and Alexander pulled off a good save. With three minutes left Overton scored their fourth when Jake Burrows put away a pass from Josh Smith.
AFC Berg proved far too strong for bottom of the table Origin, winning quite easily 7-1. Kieran Alleyne gave them the lead in the 26th minute and Carlos Gonzales made it 2-0 from a penalty. Dan Deadman made it 3-0 and added another in the second half. Paul Crowe, who has proved a useful addition to Dave Brickwood’s squad since joining this season, scored the other two goals before at 7-0 Paul Kitchen netted for Origin.
Although they did manage a 4-2 Basingstoke B Cup win back in October against Chineham, Longdog Soldiers had not won a league game after eight attempts. It came on Saturday when playing the same club when they won 2-0 and it was also sweet revenge for the 6-0 defeat they suffered again them in the Peter Raynbird Cup. The first goal, scored by Sam Trodd in the 20th minute was a gift after the keeper made a mistake following a corner kick. The second was scored by Trodd when he curled in a shot too good for the keeper after being put through by Joe Oates, recently transferred from Bounty United. This win takes them off the bottom of the table.
In the Quarter Finals of the Basingstoke B Cup AFC Aldermaston A had to concede their Basingstoke B Cup Quarter Final against Winklebury Wizards. Although there has been some response for their appeal for new players, it was too late for them to be included in this game. Wizards will now meet Herriard Sports in the Semi Finals.
