Two re-arranged matches in the Everards Tiger League Cup rounded off the weekend, and both saw the table being turned. AFC North Kilworth were leading Ellistown 2-0 when the weather intervened a fortnight ago, whilst a serious injury halted Highfield Rangers against Mountsorrel Amateurs with Rangers 1-0 up at the time. Starting at Terrace Road, Ellistown face NK for take two. Andy Grout reports for Ramble Round:
"Ellistown returned to winning ways with a hard-fought and deserved 2-1 victory over AFC North Kilworth. The victory moving us into the next round of the League Cup. Understandably, North Kilworth will feel hard done by as they were cruising in the previous game before mother nature took over forcing the abandonment. It was 0-0 at half-time, and keenly-fought, the deadlock broken on 57 minutes as the ball landed at sub Noel Fitzgerald's feet, he jinked down the byline, crossed into the box a peach of a ball which Sonny Sheasby swept in.
That goal raised the octane level as soon after, North Kilworth were down to 9 men through a sending off and sin bin. With 9 men, Kilworth had their best spell of the game and when they went back to 10 equalised on 77 mins when Tyler Garrard out muscled the defender to run through on goal and score. At this point, North Kilworth were looking favorites to pick up the victory as they kept the Ellistown keeper busy. The hosts had to re-group and rejoin the battle and they did so when with 3 minutes to go, Kielan Thackeray picked up the ball 30 yards out, drove forward and let rip a Stuart Pearce special that the Kilworth keeper found too hot to handle and the ball smashed into the bottom of the net to make it 2-1.
North Kilworth tried to come back, but could find no more, and Ellistown spurned a chance to make it 3-1 in injury time- but 2-1 was good enough after a winless September for the hosts."
Meanwhile at Gleneagles Avenue, Mountsorrel Amateurs of Div1 pulled off a giant-killing as they won 3-1 at Premier Division side Highfield Rangers. Liam Turner led the way with a brace, Anderson Tomas also scoring for Mountsorrel, Yankuba Rumpuwarch scoring in the first half for Highfield, who exit the competition, their second cup exit in a week after losing at Kirby Muxloe in the Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
Next weekend sees the four of the five outstanding games of the Tiger Cup first round being played, FC Khalsa at home to Anstey Town, Div1 side St Patricks at home to Magna 73, Thurnby Rangers welcome Dunton & Broughton United, and Whetstone Athletic of Div2 host Premier side Sileby Town, with Glen Villa hosting Brookside Athletic in an all-Div2 clash on October 19.
Before that, we have another Midweek Ramble, with the three outstanding ties in the Senior Cup involving LSL sides, and the one remaining first round tie in the City Goldsmiths President's Trophy, Kirby Muxloe Reserves at home to Heather St John Reserves, all four games taking place on Tuesday night. That's the Midweek Ramble, and there'll be another triple-bill next weekend, with Ramble Round the Cups, Ramble Round the Premier, and Ramble Round the Divisions. No international break for us... See you then.
