Team FC upset FC Everest to win Bernard Cornish Cup
TEAM FC sprung a surprise in the final of the Bernard Cornish Cup, lifting the cup after a 3-1 win over FC Everest, who play their football in a higher division of the Basingstoke and District Sunday League.
Everest nearly took the lead after just eight minutes, but Team goalkeeper Brad Yates made a good save to deny Sam Cato. Everest lost Aaron Burt to a red card just before the break, the midfielder being sent off for using abusive language towards assistant referee Peter Cunningham. Team made the most of their man advantage after the break and took the lead on 58 minutes, when Mark Frost's shot beat Everest goalkeeper Terry Dingle.
The same player made it 2-0 with 20 minutes to go, converting Ryan Stephens' cross on the half-volley. Cato headed over as Everest tried to get back into the game, but Stephens' excellent solo goal extended Team's lead to three goals. Everest substitute Shane Dowling pulled a goal back late on, but there was no late comeback and Team's Dan Cale could have extended the lead in stoppage-time.
Republic of Chineham were unable to win the Kelvin Cup, losing 4-2 after extra-time to Barton Stacey. The sides had been locked together at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, but it was the Andover who went on to win the game in the additional period.
