Round Up 2 October 2010
CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUND UP WEEK ENDING 2 October 2010
Division One table toppers Maghull and West Kirby returned to league action at the weekend and were looking to continue their domination at the peak. Maghull edged through as winners in a closely fought five goal thriller at home to Marshalls. The Old hall Field outfit claimed the odd goal through Lee Tynan, Tom Foley and Michael Boyle. Marshalls were in no way overawed by their visit to the early season leaders and claimed two goals through James Nilsen and Phil Davies. It seemed that West Kirby were going to make hard work of overcoming the newly revitalised Upton AA at Marine Park but eventually ran out worthy 2-0 winners thanks to the efforts of Chay Dysart and Chris McGinn. Perhaps Maghull and West Kirby are not to have things their own after as Helsby continue to impress. The Cheshire side continued with their impressive recent run of form with a convincing 0-2 win at Newtons Millcroft home. Goals from Gary Tyrell and Reece Conlan have put Helsby just three points away from the summit with two games in hand. Southport Trinity have taken some observers by surprised but were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Vauxhall Motors Reserves. Newly promoted and experiencing some real trouble in finding a home base, Trinity can be quietly pleased with the current placing of fourth. Heswall will also feel that they are in with a shout as they managed an odd-goal-in-five win at home to Christleton. In what, on paper, should have been a far easier victory, the Gayton Park team were made to fight all the way by Christleton. A brace from David Swaine and a single from Matty Houghton cancelled out goals from Nathan Freeman and Craig Warrington for the visitors. Marine Reserves recovered from their shock home defeat to South Sefton Borough in the midweek Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup by recording a 2-1 home win over Ellesmere Port in a far from convincing performance. Ports Lee Moore claimed what turned out to be only a consolation goal thanks to the Crosby sides, Mike Brown and Jack Bird.
Things are hotting up at the top of Division Two with Ashville and Chester Nomads now nine points clear of the field after just ten and nine games played respectively. With due respect to Nomads, pride of place this weekend must go to Wallasey side, Ashville who comprehensively thrashed Mallaby by seven goals to two at Villa Park. A hat trick for Tim Bigland, a brace for Ross Rule plus singles from Craig Griffiths and Mark Bainbridge confirmed that Ashville are right back on track. However they will be keeping an eye on Chester Nomads who have a game in hand. Nomads put in a sterling display to overcome West Kirby Reserves by one goal to nil, with Andy Fitzgibbon ensuring all three points. Mossley Hill Athletic put in a stunning display to win 1-5 at Capenhurst Villa. A hat trick for Kevin Frankland and singles for Bryan Little and Yusef Malik ensured a happy trip back through the tunnel for Athletic. Villas sole reply came from Cameron Forster. Harrison Park saw a five goal thriller as New Brighton beat visitors Richmond Raith Rovers 3-2. Scorers were Jay Clare, Paul Howell and Sean Robinson for the home side and two from John Garner for Rovers.AFC Bebington Athletic claimed a 3-1 home win over Maghull Reserves through Graeme Carvell (2) and Craig Graves. Jay Wynne scored for the visitors. The season continues to go poorly for Bronze Social firmly rooted to the bottom of the league. Their cause was not helped with visitors Heswall Reserves recording a 1-3 win thanks to two goals from Dave Burton and a single for Gordon Harrington. An own goal meant Bronze avoided going goalless on the day, but they remain winless this season.
The shock of the day saw Manor Athletic go down 1-0 at Marshalls Reserves, allowing Runcorn Linnets Reserves to claim top spot following a 5-3 home win over AFC Bebington Athletic Reserves.
