Press release about our Finals Day on 12 June
York Against Cancer teams up with local football league for fundraising event at the LNER Community Stadium
On Saturday 12th June, the new LNER Community Stadium will host the Minster Engineering Football League cup finals. The charity, which has recently relocated to the stadium, fund important cancer services locally and the wider area of North and East Yorkshire including Selby and Malton.
The Senior and Junior cup finals will be preceded by a ‘curtain raiser’ match between F1 Racing FC and a League Representative team containing players from other teams not involved in the cup matches. The turnstiles will open at 11.30am for a kick-off time of 12 noon.
The event programme:
12 noon: F1 Racing v Minster League representative team
2pm: Senior final – Wiggington Grasshoppers v Huntington Rovers
4.15pm: Junior Final – Rufforth United v Pollington
Colin Atkinson, secretary of the League said: “The interest has been amazing, and we have already sold the initial allocation of 1000 tickets. We are now looking to secure some further tickets for general sale”. Tickets for general sale are available from York Against Cancer and are priced at £7.50 for what is a full day’s entertainment. He continued: “We are very grateful to the City of York Council and the Stadium Management Team for allowing the event at such short notice, and the sponsors who have stepped in to ensure the Charity will receive an important funding boost. We hope to be able to satisfy all requests for tickets”.
Julie Russell, general manager of York Against Cancer says: ”I am delighted that the League is supporting us, and that JMD Group (UK) Ltd, a Wetherby based company who undertook our recent office and shop fitout has agreed to support the event. There is a link between keeping fit and healthy which can reduce chances of getting cancer and this is a message that York Against Cancer is keen to promote.”
In these difficult times people will be aware that in all stadium venues visitors need to adhere to social distancing guidelines and the wearing of face masks.
Hospitality provided by CGC event caterers is now also available at the Stadium for those who want to make it a really special day and is priced at £25 on top of the ticket price of £7.50. 2 courses are provided: Slow cooked pulled beef cottage pie served with heritage carrot, stem broccoli, Yorkshire pudding and thick beef jus followed by Lemon posset.
Individual tables of up to 6 are available in line with current guidance. Those enjoying hospitality will also have access to the bars and facilities within the hospitality suite. The food outlets within the Stadium will also be open for supporters to buy drinks and snacks during the event.
Julie Russell added: “There has been a huge effort by everyone involved in putting this special day together, and we will also have the chance to showcase the very special services that are provided by York Against Cancer at Vangarde, all funded by the generous donations, legacies and fundraising of local people”.
As well as JMD Group sponsorship, local sports supplier Newitts has provided match balls for the event with Pavers also supporting the Charity.
Tickets are priced at £7.50 (no concessions) with hospitality at £25 and are available from the York Against Cancer shop or offices at the Community Stadium or by calling 01904 764466 between 9am and 4.30pm Mon-Fri.
