NUNEATON & DISTRICT SUNDAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
MATCH DAY 17 (DECEMBER 10th 2023) REPORT.

ONLY TWO GAMES SURVIVE THE WEATHER !

The only league fixture to survive the washout this past weekend was at Clarendon Park, Hinckley as Phoenix United welcomed The Travs from Bedworth in MARK BLAIR MORTGAGE & FINANCE LEAGUE TWO.

The first goal was scored by Travs midway through the first half as Michael Hutchinson’s free kick was saved by the Phoenix keeper but squared back into the path of Freddie Wakelin who fired Travs in front.

Phoenix responded well to going behind and it wasn’t long before Dan Trezise found Ben Whittaker just outside the box who fired home the equaliser.

For the rest on the first half Phoenix were in charge and with the creative work of Dan Trezise, scored a further 2 goals from his assists. First Sam Spencer and then Josh Smith found the net before Sam Spencer unselfishly squared the ball to Sam Eaton who sent Phoenix in at the break 4-1 up.

The Home team picked up where they left off after the break when a lovely diagonal pass over the top from Lewis Spencer found Sam Eaton who netted his second of the morning.

The game looked like it was done and dusted at 5-1 but Travs had other ideas. Lee Wallace led the charge with a penalty and 20 yard strike to peg it back to 5-3.
Phoenix always looked dangerous on the break and went on to make it 6-3 when Josh Smith picked out Ben Whittaker who’s shot looked to be heading straight into the arms of the keeper but at the last minute took an awkward bobble to throw the keeper off track and roll into the net.

Travs again put up a fight to get back into the game and did just that with a sublime chip from Freddie Wakelin but Phoenix held out and went on to take the points, winning 6-4, in the wet conditions.
