Robertson Scaffolding reach greater heights by beating the top of the Premier League team Elmfield SC; this follows the defeat of another top premier team Simonside Arms in the previous round.
This was a particularly good performance considering a number of key players were missing. Goalkeeper Ryan Docherty was unavailable so Micky Urwin who was pencilled in to replace David Mullen who was at a family wedding in the heart of the defence had to deputise in goal. Brian Johnson who has a long term foot injury was replaced by Cal Wade. Darryll Donnelly was still missing due to an injury and Dave Smith due to illness. Striker Aaron Todd had to fill in at Centre-half. Captain Ian Hudson had picked up a knee injury playing for his Saturday team so was not risked as Chrissy Sinclair was back and available and so Ian Hudson joined Craig Lowther as the only two available substitutes.
Robertson Scaffolding got off to a great start with two quality finishes from Christie Elliott and Stevie Stephenson and if the Premier team had thought they were in for an easy game against a team from a division below they certainly quickly realised that Robertsons impressive start which has left them at the top of the A Division has been no fluke. For the first half hour Robertsons were certainly on top but Elmfield showed their experience by pulling back two goals from Craig Armstrong and Chris Eves the second goal coming on the stroke of halftime.
Elmfield started the second half clearly on top and took a 3-2 lead with another strike from Craig Armstrong. Robertson Scaffolding were beginning to be overrun in midfield and so manager Steve Dean decided to risk playing the not 100% fit Ian Hudson by replacing Declan Tilson . Micky Urwin was performing heroics in the Robertson goal. Many teams who fall behind to a higher league team would just fold but not the young Robertson team they rallied and every player gave their all in an effort to get back in the game, and this they did when Christie Elliott got his second which took a fortuitous deflection passed Anth Dixon in the Elmfield goal to level the scores at 3-3.
Ian Hudson rewarded his managers faith in him by scoring the winner to make it 4-3. Elmfield tried their utmost to get back on level terms but their was no way past Urwin in goal though Elmfield thought they had equalised but the referee rightly disallowed it when the ball was knocked out of his hands when he clearly had it in his grasp and took a painful knock in the process. Craig Lowther was rewarded for all his patience in recent weeks by at least getting a run out for the last 10 minutes when Chrissy Sinclair had to come off with a touch of cramp, Lowther slotting in at right back and the ever versatile Dan Purvis moving to centre midfield.
Many people will look on this as the shock result of the round but people who have seen the young Robertson team play know how capable a team they really are.
